The 2017 Scharzhofberger Riesling GG opens with a ripe, concentrated, flinty, herbal and lemon-scented bouquet of crushed stones and ethereal perfume notes. Lush and intense on the palate, this is a concentrated, powerful and very intense but also structured and tonic Scharzhofberger that needs some years in the bottle to soften its edges—or at least a day or two in the open bottle. The aftertaste is pure and compact, with lots of crushed stones and lemons. This wine is, as always, asking for patience but will certainly deliver! Mosel Fine Wines - 2017 SCHARZHOFBERGER Riesling Grosses Gewächs Q.b.A. trocken, Van Volxem

The 2017er Scharzhofberger GG comes from the central and eastern parts of the vineyard. This offers a gorgeous nose of wet stone, lemon zest, grapefruit, a hint of white flower and lots of minerals and smoke. The wine is nicely tart and spicy on the palate and leaves a pure and clean feel of pear, aniseed herbs and chalky minerals in the long and zesty finish. 2020-2032. - Okt. 2018

Vinous - 2017 SCHARZHOFBERGER Riesling Grosses Gewächs Q.b.A. trocken, Van Volxem

Chervil, fennel and oregano are accompanied on the nose by suggestions of white peach that are – in a departure from several other Van Volxem 2017s – at least as much about the flesh of the fruit as about its pit. The feel is subtly silken; there is a welcome generosity of fruit juiciness; and the buoyant finish – at just 12% alcohol – is admirably transparent to a shimmering wealth of herbal, stony, saline and smoky nuances. I don’t disagree with some of my German counterparts who have pointed out that this is a more approachable and agreeable Grosses Gewächs than several of its immediate siblings.
