The 2018 Mölsheim Riesling unites the fruits from the Frauenberg, Schwarzer Herrgoot and Silberberg and opens with a pure, intense and very mineral bouquet with notes of crushed flint stones. Great precision and definition. Silky and very elegant on the first palate, this is a firmly structured, still untamed but long and complex dry Riesling that is made for Riesling freaks and the long distance. Vinous
This exhibits a stronger fruit component – with scents and flavors of white peach and pumpkin flesh – than does the corresponding Hohen-Sülzener bottling, if also a tad less clarity or intrigue. That having been said, there is a lot to like here. A sense of stone suffusion enhances the impression of pithy extract on an otherwise appealingly silken palate. Piquancy and tang of peach near the core serve for invigoration, and mineral salts for salivary stimulation, on a mouthwateringly sustained finish. This bottling represents fruit from three Einzellagen including that mouthful-of-a-site Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott, in Southern Rheinhessen’s cool Zellertal. (Any declassified fruit from Spanier’s recently restored neighboring vineyard in the Kreuzberg Einzellage will never qualify for inclusion in this bottling, because that site is officially in the Pfalz, not Rheinhessen.) - David Schildknecht, Nov. 2020
