The Thanisch 2010 Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Spatlese A.P. #5 adds a gooseberry-like tartness to the prominent lemon-lime citricity already exhibited by most wines in the present collection, and the result – when pitted against quite prominent residual sugar – is something of a sweet sour tension that not everyone will view positively. In addition to site-typical muskiness, there is a faintly fusil as well as wet stone overlay to the aromatics here and a corresponding sense of stoniness to the wine’s energetically persistent finish. Palpably high-extract and texturally firm, this is going to as befits its site need longer to show it’s true meddle than will its Badstube or Lay counterparts. I don’t doubt that it will retain stamina for at least 15 years, though whether it will pick up profound complexity in the process I am not going to try predicting. - David Schildknecht, Dez. 2011
