Based on manually selected parts and berries, the 2015 (Saarburg) Rausch Riesling Spätlese (Versteigerung) AP #7 is clear and very fine on the nose, with bright fruit and fine slate aromas. Delicate and finessed on the palate, this is a remarkably elegant and weightless Spätlese with great precision and a noble piquancy in the salty, crystalline finish. Vinous
Very ripe honeydew melon, quince and kiwi deliver an attention-getting nose and luscious palate presence, though one with a more palpable sense of extract and considerable firmness when compared with the corresponding non-auction Spätlese. I miss the herbal and mineral dimensions that lent that A.P. #8 some of its charm and complexity, but there’s no question that this auction lot (which corresponds to an entire thousand-liter fuder) finishes with imposing richness and memorable persistence.
