The Zilliken 2008 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spatlese A.P. #3 turns a sharp corner in ripeness from its predecessors, transporting the taster from northern orchards to tropical groves of grapefruit, mango, pineapple, and papaya. Atop that profusion of fruit wafts complimentarily sweet perfume of cherry blossom, lily, and heliotrope. Texturally, too, this marks a departure from the wines that preceded it in this year’s collection for its degree of flattering creaminess. But none of these differences prevent this Spatlese from exhibiting almost weightless buoyancy, ravishing refreshment, and a cool cantus firmus of wet slate.
