Mosel Fine Wines - 2018 Saar Riesling Q.b.A., Van Volxem
The 2018er Saar Riesling is a dry wine made from “yo unger” (i.e. less than 25 years old) vines from the vario us holdings of the Estate in the Saar. It offers a beautiful nose made of candied grapefruit, grilled citrus, green apple, white flowers, and minty herbs, even if it i s still slightly reductive at this stage. The wine proves energetic and nicely balanced on the palate as the zesty side is nicely wrapped into a nice touch of creamy fruits. It leaves one with a nice sense of minerals, spices, and citrus in the fully dry-tasting finish. 2020-2028

Vinous - 2018 Saar Riesling Q.b.A., Van Volxem
This legally trocken cuvée as usual reflects estate parcels that are less than 30 years old, though in 2017 I would not rule out fruit from older vines having also been included. In what may be a sign of early-harvested material (and of lots that did not undergo malolactic transformation), there is a surprising prominence of green apple and gooseberry manifesting itself both on the nose, and as a tart edge on the otherwise texturally rather gentle palate. Wood smoke and wet stone also feature from start to finish, and green herbal impingements add further invigoration to the brightly persistent finish. - David Schildknecht, Juli 2020
