The 2017 Maximin Grünhaus Abtsberg Riesling GG offers a deep, complex, slightly flinty bouquet with ripe and concentrated fruit aromas intertwined with herbal and mineral notes. Full-bodied yet elegant and refined on the palate, this is a persistently salty and tensioned Abtsberg with quite a lot of power but very good and promising length. Apple seed, peach kernel and wet stone penetratingly and piquantly confront the nose, anticipating the borderline bitterness that prevails on the glossy palate. Certainly there is some tangy fruit juiciness, as well as stony, alkaline and pungently green herbal counterpoint, but the finish displays considerably less energy or clarity than that of the corresponding Herrenberg.
