The 2017 Riesling Erdener Treppchen Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is bright and even floral (hyacinths) on the clear, slatey, highly refined but aromatic nose with its precise stone fruit and delicate flinty aromas. Silky, sweet and round, with great finesse, elegance and seamless, perfectly balanced texture, this is a lean but lush, incredibly fine and filigreed Auslese with a long, fresh, piquant and salty finish. The 2017er Erdener Treppchen Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) offers a rich and ample nose of grapefruit, mango, guava, cassis, pineapple and almond paste on the nose. The wine proves superbly focused and vibrant on the palate despite all the richness and smoothness at play. Vinous - 2017 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese*** goldene Kapsel, Markus Molitor

Even as far gone in ripeness and marked by botrytis as this bottling is, it shares with other Erdener Treppchen bottlings in the present collection a greenhouse-like combination of floral perfume and scents of foliage, along with notes of mint and sassafras, for an aromatic effect at once heady and cooling. Bread-like yeasty as well as musky animal notes offer striking testimony to botrytis. A corresponding contrast emerges on the silken, overtly dense palate, where fresh lemon juiciness and tang of pineapple core cut the sweetness-backed richness and overripeness of mango and guava. The dynamic layering of fruits, flowers and herbs – remarkably transparent to stony underpinnings – is joined on a sensationally sustained finish by salinity that veritably milks the salivary glands. - David Schildknecht, Jan. 2020
