Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 2016 Wawern GOLDBERG Riesling Grosses Gewächs Q.b.A. trocken, Van Volxem

The 2016 Goldberg Riesling displays an intense and perfectly ripe stone fruit bouquet along with very fine (red) slate aromas. Crystalline, fresh and pretty dry but nevertheless lush and aromatic on the palate, this is a tight yet elegant and remarkably fine Goldberg with vital acidity and purity in the piquant, mouthwatering finish. But wait! The minerals and tannins are still too astringent for many palates today, so keep the wine for 5, 10 or even 20 years—it will surely never be disappointing. It's the finest dry Goldberg I have tasted from Van Volxem so far (March 2018). - Stephan Reinhardt, April 2018

Mosel Fine Wines - 2016 Wawern GOLDBERG Riesling Grosses Gewächs Q.b.A. trocken, Van Volxem

The 2016er Wawerner Goldberg GG provides a slightly big nose of yellow peach, pear, grapefruit, passion fruit and fine herbs. The wine develops good elegant presence on the palate, with pear, minerals and earthy spices driving the aromatic profile. The finish is nicely playful and refined. 2019-2026 - Okt. 2018

Vinous - 2016 Wawern GOLDBERG Riesling Grosses Gewächs Q.b.A. trocken, Van Volxem

Like its 2015 predecessor, this vividly evokes crushed stone and delivers a fascinating, elusive ore-like mineral note already in the nose, here joined by pungently smoky notes of struck flint, all of this anticipating the sense of palpable mineral saturation displayed on a palate of satiny richness. Influxes of pepper cress and peach kernel add incisive cut and pronounced piquancy that are only somewhat assuaged by the sense of white peach juiciness. So yes, the effect is on the austere side. But what an amazing amalgam of stony, smoky, and saline mineral matter is conveyed in the long finish, and with what vibrancy! Put 12.5-13% alcohol behind this and it would probably turn downright overbearing. But happily, that’s not something Niewodniczanski and Völk permit. This is going to prove really intriguing to follow and, I suspect, long-lived by Grosses Gewächs standards. - David Schildknecht, März 2018
