From Kanzem's top vineyard (and one of the greatest and warmest in the Saar Valley), the 2016 Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Alte Reben has a super ripe, almost raisiny nose with very fine slate aromas. After a few hours, the nose gets finer and finer, and the flinty/stony flavors take over. Highly elegant on the silky textured palate, this is an intense, lush and powerful but finessed Riesling with enormous length and concentration and a super pure and salty finish. The 2016er Kanzemer Altenberg Alte Reben GG develops a delicately creamy nose with infused pear, lemony elements, star fruit, dried herbs and a hint of melon. The wine is hugely backward on the palate but already hints at greatness to come as ripe, fine herbs and ripe acidity make for a wonderful interplay right into the delicately powerful finish. Ripe white peach, apple and lime are fragrantly wreathed in wisteria as well as accompanied by high-toned evocations of almond extract in an unforgettably haunting nose. Corresponding flavors of almond and peach, along with alluring hints of pistachio extract, contribute to the sense of richness conveyed on a creamy yet lusciously-fruited palate. One wants to bathe and luxuriate in this luscious libation with its seductive sense of extract-sweetness and strikingly persistent inner-mouth floral perfume, yet at the same time, Riesling’s humble duty to refresh and renew one’s palate is not forgotten, while all that fruit and perfume remains vividly grounded in slate. - David Schildknecht, März 2018
