Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2003 Riesling trocken Geheimrat J displays a cool, fresh and citrusy nose with ethereal lemon aromas but also spicy notes of crushed rocks. Enormously juicy and zesty on the palate, this is a dense, concentrated, very salty Riesling with firm structure wrapped in extract. Still very young, but it's a promising Geheimrat with great aging potential. 2003 was a harbinger of what has since become the new normal: a vintage full of records from spring to fall, too dry and actually "too warm" overall, according to Michael Burgdorf. Flowering was very early (June 3), as was the start of ripening (August 2). The harvest began on September 22. Nevertheless, the vintage produced unexpectedly high-quality wines, and the 2003 Geheimrat J is a prime example. Tasted as part of the big Geheimrat J vertical in Wiesbaden, January 2024. - Stephan Reinhardt, Apr. 2024
